{"id":21659,"date":"2022-11-28T18:54:57","date_gmt":"2022-11-28T13:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/demo.testctsl.in\/indiafirstepaper?p=21659"},"modified":"2022-11-28T18:54:57","modified_gmt":"2022-11-28T13:24:57","slug":"covid-19-pandemic-pushes-some-460000-people-below-poverty-line-in-cambodia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/demo.testctsl.in\/indiafirstepaper\/2022\/11\/28\/covid-19-pandemic-pushes-some-460000-people-below-poverty-line-in-cambodia\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19 Pandemic Pushes Some 460,000 People Below Poverty Line in Cambodia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some 460,000 people in Cambodia have fallen below the poverty lin due to the Covid-19 pandemic, said a World Bank report released on Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titled &#8216;Poverty Assessment Report for Cambodia, Toward a More Inclusive and Resilient Cambodia&#8217;, the report said Cambodia&#8217;s poverty rate dropped from 33.8 per cent to 17.8 per cent over the 10-year period between 2009 and 2019, with almost 2 million people escaping poverty, reports Xinhua news agency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Since 2020, the rate has increased by 2.8 percentage points, indicating that around 460,000 people have fallen below poverty income thresholds,&#8221; the report said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maryam Salim, World Bank country manager for Cambodia, said despite the impressive success in poverty reduction from 2009 to 2019, many households remained vulnerable, with few savings or safety nets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This meant Covid-19 dealt a setback to the country&#8217;s progress in combating poverty as employment and wages diminished,&#8221; she said while launching the report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To support a more inclusive and resilient recovery from the pandemic and the economic shocks that came with it, Cambodia could consider a range of policy actions, the report said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It added that these included targeted cash transfers, steps to strengthening social protection and investments in health and education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Southeast Asian nation has a population of 16 million people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Bank said the national poverty line in the kingdom is 10,951 riel or $2.7 per person a day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some 460,000 people in Cambodia have fallen below the poverty lin due to the Covid-19 pandemic, said a World Bank report released on Monday.
